Rethinking Jeans for Quilts #2

Sewing with jeans is not for the faint of heart.  I recommend you practice with scraps and getting a feel for it. Its tough if you don’t have a walking foot. A walking foot is absolutely essential if you don’t want to keep changing needles. I broke a few learning this. I also have broke many types of threads learning how to sew jeans.

Jeans are meant to be sewn with jeans thread if you are making french folded seams into a new pair of jeans. But for quilting they are various ways one can easily sew jeans. Some quilter have used sashing of 100% cotton sew between the jean chunks and this a good way if your want to make just one jean quilt. But for me, I make all sort of quilts with jeans, all sorts of bags and even jewelry with jeans.

Its not that I don’t use new fabric, I do, but why let something go to the wastefulness of a landfill? That is what’s happening at our local transfer station in Telkwa. Lots of good usable clothing is not being recovered in any way. Its crazy!

Jeans can be made easier while increasing recycling of other clothing into your quilt. For me, it’s a great lot of fun to discover a new way to reuse jeans and I encourage my readers to not be afraid to go out of the box. In fact, don’t even go into the box in the first place. Be free, pretend, let the fabric fairies tickle your toes!

My intention is educate and empower you to “rethink” how we discard clothing as if there is no tomorrow. Jeans can be a lovely addition to any quilt top, in my upcoming book, I go into jeans in quilts in a big way. Creativity is only limited by our reluctance to rethink it all.
Look at this photo, everyone is wearing  jeans! Lots of fiber here, people, get creative!
